I have this visitor that comes to see me each night.
As you can see from the newspaper he is reading that he is very smart.
I am not quite sure how I taught him to read, but he reads just fine.
He visits and gets to eat all of his food for free, all of his food for free.
I have this visitor that comes to see me each night.
He walks around in my yard just as big as he pleases, the little tart.
He comes to my compost pile and picks and chooses as he goes down the line.
He visits, and the cats of mine, just sit there and stare, just sit there and stare.
I have this visitor that comes to see me each night.
I have chased this visitor all over my back yard and he runs fairly fast.
When I have him cornered with no more places to run away.
He plays possum and just stops and stares at me, stops and stares at me.
I have this visitor that comes to see me each night.
I will turn the lantern on him sitting there, playing possum with me at last.
He sits there not moving a muscle, barely breathing, he is a possum, he stays.
I take out my camera and move in for the shot, I take a shot, I take a shot.
I have this visitor that comes to see me each night.
I have taken enough pictures of him and each time he seems afraid of me.
But I have only taken the pictures of him so that my family will be able to see.
The possum who still visits me each night, and will still visit me each night.

Hi mrsupole, pretty neat! Silly possum. You should prob'ly adopt him/her? as it looks like it's found some easy eats, wot?
lol. had one of those and had to get rid of him as he became a nuisance. drove my cat batty. but he produced wonderful words in you so give him that!
He obviously would like a nice meaty treat...
Hi subt,
I think the dang possum adopted me. The mother must of died. She used to come to my sliding glass door and watch me. But this year it is just the baby here in the picture. He eats out of the compost pile I have out back. Yes those are easy eats.
Hi Brian,
We are trying to get rid of him, but not sure how. Can you please tell me what you did to get rid of it? Please.......I would really appreciate it. It drives the dogs next door crazy, my cats just sit there and watch it run all over. They act like it is another human. They would fight any cats who come into their yard.
Hi VE,
It seems to be a vegetarian and only stays here cause it gets fed daily. He eats his treats and waddles around the yard. He is starting to be like his mom and comes on the patio to look in the sliding glass door, but does not stay like the mom did. I guess it was like she was watching TV and I was the star. Oh well, she must be gone.
God bless.
Does his tail look like a rat's tail? We'd love to see that!
We had raccoons that are tame and friendly like that. They will just sit at the back door and look in and watch us!
Glad he can read, you taught him well!
Hi! Mrsupole,
What a nice rhyming poem...and I hate to admit this, but I’ am afraid of possum.
My father is a gardener and they seem to appear after he mows and water his lawn. Thanks, for sharing!
DeeDee ;-D
Wow! Big header there but a pretty flower :0)
Living out here in the country I'm surprised that we don't have possums but I guess that the apex predators out here keep them away though we do have lots of bunnies which my dog loves to chase though never manages to catch. :0)
Where I live, possum is pie making material! LOL!
I am thinking you must make peace and be friends with this possum who has taken up reading your newspaper!
Nice rhyming, and a great possum shot!
Sherry: What curious pets you have! You should take him on Pet Star or whatever the name of that program is where you take your pet and compete against others. Your possum can READ!! You will WIN!
I did read your Iran poem a day or so ago and left a comment. It is wonderful. It is so interesting that your arm went numb when you were writing. Maybe kind of like automatic writing where the spirit comes through you.
I'm having so much trouble commenting on your blog. Some blogger sites just don't like me today. I love your possum. It's so nice when wildlife comes into your garden. Ours aren't nearly as tame!
Hi T & C,
It looks like a big faaaaat rat's tail. Vurrry big. But this is still a fairly small possum and I am not sure why Joey and Jericho are not eating it. They eat everything else around here. Maybe you know why.
Hi Betsy,
The mom to this possum would do the same thing, just sit there at the sliding glass window and watch me. As long as I did not move towards it, she would stay. I would love to have a racoon looking in, but we do not seem to have any here. And the mom possum was huge, big as a small dog. My one cat weighs over 18 pounds and the mom was bigger than my cat. I am not sure if she is still alive, cause she has not been here so far this summer, and this baby one seems to be alone. They like my house for some reason, I think cause we do not have any dogs.
Hi Dot-Com,
Isn't that cool, I worked really hard to teach it. Next I am going to give it a book. Have you heard of Possum School? My possum gets good grades.
Hi DeeDee,
My daughter is scared of them too. When she comes to pick up my grandson, I have to go outside and make sure it is safe to let her walk up to the door. The possum has been camping out there lately. I got me a little jungle growing out there right now. I might have to cut some of it back down again. I just wanted the flowers to bloom this year. But the possum is more afraid of you, than you ever can be of it. Remember we look like giants to them. I think I was only a foot away when I took this picture and the possum was frozen in its spot. It was playing possum with me and hoping I had not seen it. It did not move for the 20 minutes we were there checking it out. Drool was dripping out of its mouth. I hope it does not have rabies. I better check on this. But it was not foaming, it might be okay.
God bless.
Hi Delaney,
Yes, it was a big picture, I was experimenting, I took it down, until I figure out how to make it smaller. I will work on it. Bunnies can run faster than a possum, we had a pet bunny when the girls were little, but never any wild ones here. I am not sure if they could climb our fences here. I know there are some areas here in Southern California that have too many wild bunnies and the people hate them. They eat everything. They should just catch them and take them to the fire areas and let them eat the underbrush and then get big and fat, so the mountain lions could eat some of them and stop attacking the pet dogs and cats. Just think how much food the rabbits would have, the mountain lions and coyotes would have, the money we tax payers would save from fighting the fires here. It just looks like a win, win situation to me. Oh, but PETA would have a fit. But it is nature and better than killing the bunnies.
Hi Otin,
You sound like my hubby, he just keeps saying that the possum looks like he would taste like chicken and we need to make possum stew with him. Oh my, why do you men think that way. The poor baby possum.
Do you have any good recipes for possum stew or possum pie?
I need to trap that darn thing. We put the rind in our compost pile from a watermelon we had this past weekend at our barbeque and that little possum cleaned the rinds up. It left the peelings, but none of the watermelon is left. If it touches my tomatoes, it is going to be stew meat, no matter how well he reads. I hope he reads this.
God bless.
Hi Jill,
As long as he leaves my tomatoes alone and just reads the newspaper every night when he visits then he will have a peaceful life with me. Just because he runs faster than me. And he is making me get exercise chasing him.
Hi A.D.
Thank you.
I really had to run to get that shot and corner the darn thing. I got within a foot of him. But I did draw the line at petting him. If you go online, you can pull up some crazy people petting them and holding them. I is too smart to do that. After almost cutting off one of my toes, twice, I like to keep my fingers where they belong. My toes too.
Hi Ronda,
I never thought about winning anything. But he is a smart little pet possum. Maybe I should have a name that possum contest.
Thank you for your comment about the Iran poem. Did you read the comment from the young Iranian girl. My body became so heavy when I read her comment. I cannot even explain how heavy my heart felt. I mean my whole body felt this weight on my soul. I worry for them all. I think I have had over 300 hits on that poem and only one of them brave enough to leave a comment. My heart feels for them. I have heard the bad things the government is doing to these people. Did you see Christina's flag. I have asked her if she can post the poem with her flag illustration. They seem to go together somehow.
God bless.
Hi Baino,
I know what you mean about blogger not working. I swear this has been going on for a few months now. It would say that it cannot connect to this site. Or Operation Failure and shut my IE down. And every comment I leave I have to try two to three times to leave. I just wish everyone would take the word verification off cause I have to type a new one each time and it is easier if I do not have to do this. That is why I keep mine off. It is so much easier for you all to leave comments.
You know you get a lot more wild life than we do. If you ever go on a map, you would see that where I live you can travel for over 100 miles and never leave the cities. Just start on the 10 freeway in Santa Monica and go east past the 15 freeway North and then you will get to where I live. Keep going on the 10 East and you will still be in another city. I think there are over 36 million people in California and most of them live around Los Angeles.
We used to have a big white owl that flew around the neighborhood at night. I think someone shot it and then the possums started showing up. The owl ate them and kept our rat and mice population in check. My cats will kill any rats or mice that come in our yard, but they always leave the possums alone. Dang cats need to read their contracts that I wrote for them when they came here to live. Maybe I need to quit buying cat food and they will take care of that darn possum. But yes it is kinda fun to have that thing come in my yard. Heck I think it is living in my crawlspace in the attic. Something is up there making noise. I need to send hubby up there to check. But we do keep rat poison up there. It is safe from the cats up there...if you send me a cage, I will ship you my possum, he does know how to read. Maybe the airlines will ship him free. He can keep the crew entertained.
Well I guess I gotta go see all the TT's.
God bless.
For a while there I though you actually had a possum for a pet! :p
Great rhyming! :D
Hi reyjr,
It was like he was a pet for about 20 minutes and he still keeps visiting me every night like a pet would. I get out the flashlight and keep cornering him in the same spot, he keeps playing possum with me when I do that, so is a kinda pet that I cannot pet. But it is really fun in a way to be able to do this.
God bless.
