Opal Nation9
I went back to the University, while Father and Mother made friends with their neighbors. Father was at the country club one Tuesday night when he met the Professor. That night changed our lives forever. We were oblivious to what was occurring between Father and the Professor. They both discovered they were connoisseurs of the Scotchworth Special Reserve brand of whisky and of Precious Opals. From that first meeting they quickly became great friends, spending time together in quiet discussions that Mother thought had to do with her parents business.
A little over a year later we learned what they had been quietly discussing.
The Professor had somehow gotten Father to contribute to his Scientifical Time Contraption Corporation or as they called it the STCC. We dumbfoundedly thought Father and the Professor were going to make the most stupendous, celestial watches ever made. It took many months for Mother to catch on. The Professor would stop by for dinner a few nights a week. I was away at University, while Ben was growing up like every young little boy should.
The summer before I was to graduate from University, I came home as usual to spend time with Father, Mother and Ben. I had met the Professor while home for last summer's vacation. I was glad that Father had made such a dear friend. Both Mother and Father continued to go to the country club on a regular basis, while taking Ben and I with them every so often. I had already made friends with some other University students who also were members with their parents. It was a fun time.
My friends would come over sometimes and swim in our pool. Clara would make snacks for us, which the guys greatly enjoyed. But the most fun was when we had Clara make a picnic lunch and we would trek to the rear of our property. There was a large pond located there along with many large shade trees. Our favorite was the one with a large branch that reached out just far enough over the pond to tie a heavy rope for us to swing out over the pond and drop into the middle. We had a lot of fun in that pond.
If you did not let go of the rope just in time, you would swing further over the pond where the water was not as deep. My friend Marcus broke his leg one time by swinging just a little too far and letting go of the rope. He had found one of Father's bottles of Special Reserve and had a little too much to drink. It took us over an hour to figure out that his leg was broken and he was really hurt. We had all shared what was in the bottle. Just a little bit had made me woozy and then lazily lying under the shade trees, not really paying attention to what was going on around me.
I think it took Marcus a while to figure out his leg was broken, because he was pretty well snockered and not feeling much of anything. But as he sobered up and could not move from his spot in the pond, with the pain increasing in his leg, he soon realized his folly. He knew then that he should have held on to the rope and as it was swinging back over the middle of the pond let go of the rope then. His yelps of pain soon prompted the other guys to try and help him out of the pond. One of them, who had still been imbibing, grabbed the rope and with great ineptitude tried to swing to our friends aide. We lapsed into throes of laughter, while Marcus told him to hold on tightly. He swished over Marcus and on the back swing let go in the middle of the pond. He was of no help, being that he was sputtering around in the pond whilst trying to figure out what he was doing. The other guys sporadically made their way to Marcus, who they eventually got to the hosptial where the doctors put a cast on his leg. I cannot recollect who drove us there, but Clara said that one of the groundsmen had safely escorted us to the hospital. After that we were always a little leary of that Special Reserve.
A few weeks later, I was walking by the study and I heard the Professor and Father talking. The Professor was speaking excitedly about a place where opals were revered. I had always liked opals, Mother had an opal necklace that she wore all the time. I had known that Father was obsessed with them, but I had never known the Professor was too.
Father said, "When do you think we will be able to leave to go to the Opal Nation?"
The Professor answered, "I have a few more calculations to make, then we will have a go. Did you tell your family yet that you would be going with me and Carlos?"
I heard Father say, "No, not yet. I do not know how to explain what we are about to do. How do you tell your family that you are going to travel to a time when opals ruled the planet?"
I gasped and sat down on the floor outside the study. Mother would be devastated to hear that Father was going to leave us. Should I keep quiet and let Father tell her? What does one do after hearing a conversation such as this? I quickly ran upstairs to my room to think. I decided to keep quiet, sometimes I was sorry I had not spoken up, but who would believe me anyway? I could hardly believe what I had heard.

Time to Ditch Roe 'Viability' Rule?

great post, yet again mrsu. a little of the special reserve causing a bit of trouble. loosens the thoughts, dulls the pain, not a good combination. have had too many friends find themselves swimming in the like, doing something that changes their life forever.
ReplyDeleteHi Brian,
ReplyDeleteIt is sad that some think it dulls the pain, when it really just causes more. But it sometimes is okay to imbibe and have fun. And yes sadly some do things that change their life forever when having a little too much.
I oh so hope these stories are interesting. It is a true challenge for me to keep tying them in to the TT's. It is truly easier to just post other things for the TT's. But I will keep it going as long as I can.
God bless.
Hello!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for coming to visit The Glen!
And, I am with you in that I do not appreciate the company of spiders!!
I will visit again later and read this story!!
Jill
Love this chapter. I'm so glad you keep challenging yourself for our Theme Thursday posts. Looking forward to more as always!
ReplyDeleteThis was great, Mrs. U! I've had a look back and when I get some time, I'll read the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteYou really have a way of capturing those moments in time. I'm impressed.
Kat
Hi Jill,
ReplyDeleteThank you for another visit. Spiders are uckyyyyyy. Actually I think I hate their webs more.
I hope you enjoy the story when you come back.
God bless.
Hi Liza,
ReplyDeleteI am glad that you are enjoying them. I will keep giving more as long as I can. I think it will be more fun when I get to time travel in the stories. Not sure when that will happen, but it will.
God bless.
Hi Kat,
I like you saying the story was great and I hope that you can go back and read the other stories because they are all tied together. And the previous stories help to explain each current story. Thanks for the compliment about capturing those moments in time. It means a lot.
God bless.
Great! :)
ReplyDeleteMrsupole, you have such a clean and shiny soul. You are radiant with goodness and I so appreciate you.
ReplyDeleteOnce I get my computer upgraded (sometime soon I hope!) it'll be easier to read your blog. (Blogs with lots of gadgets hang up on my computer ... otherwise I would visit far more often.)
Thank you so much for your comment on the Puppy today! You're just plain old GOOD. Thank you.
An ongoing narrative, and you're tying the episodes into TT!? That's very adventurous, if you ask me. So smoothly done in this one, it reads completely effortless, like it really happened that way!
ReplyDeleteI will try to find time to come back and catch up. Can't wait for time travel!
Ha! I love your Opal Nation segments. But I have a new theory developing. I think this is like the TV show "Wagon Train" where every episode they keep on wagon training and never actually get to any destination. My theory is that you're going to keep us hanging in that father is never going to actually go to Opal Nation. There will just be these interesting stories all with a common hint about his upcoming adventures in Opal Nation and subsequent disappearance. You're messin' with us...aren't you? ;0)
ReplyDeleteAs usual thank you for another great segment in a great adventure.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteSherry: I can't believe you are up to episode 9. What will you do for the 1-0? I love the thought of the time travel:)
ReplyDeleteI'm Looking forward to the journey ahead Mrsupole! The Opal Nation!
ReplyDeleteThe Boozy Swing Brings Back Some Similar Memories For Me!
THis is my first visit and I love the story so I'll be back to read the rest!
ReplyDeletethe road to riches is filled with pain...but so is drunken swinging..youch!
ReplyDeleteAlso, can't believe you already have tomatoes...we are still a month away, at least; but at least i see the cherry tree is ripening.
God bless, and get well.
I think this is the first time that I have visited! I need to read the other parts to the story, but I felt like I was reading part of a screenplay for a "Romancing the Stone" Movie!
ReplyDeleteI really look forward to these . . another great installment. I broke my elbow once but didn't realise it, I was in Fiji and their xray facilities were so old, they didn't pick up the fracture . .I holiday'd on for a week with a broken elbow . .ouchies!
ReplyDeleteanother excellent installment of the opal nation!
ReplyDeleteOh, this is building nicely!
ReplyDeleteThere is no way that we would jump into that pond! Our furrs would get drenched!
ReplyDeletePee Ess: Thank you so much for giving us a glimpse of our furriend Joey. What a handsome ManCat he is!
Wow! To keep quiet or not. Very similar to the book I just finished...pt.10 will reveal?
ReplyDeleteWell, I can see that I need to start at the beginning of this amazing story! You have quite a gift! And to be able to tie it all to the TT is very impressive!
ReplyDeleteHi there!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your visit today. I'm so glad you left a comment so I could find you. I've sure enjoyed myself. You have a way with words! I'll be back.
Hugs!
Kat
"Opal nation" sounds just full of promise!
ReplyDeleteI hope you don't mind if I shamelessly promote my latest blog post which is shamelessly promoting a new crafty charity project - please read it and if you feel able help advertise (or contribute in any other way) that would be FAB
Another great part!!
ReplyDeleteHi! Mrsupole,
ReplyDeleteWow! you have me on the edge of seat!...Opal Nation9 read like a novel...just like the other commenters I can hardly, wait until the next installment. I also like the way that you incorporated "swings" into your post too!
Thanks for sharing!...
...as usual!
DeeDee ;-D
We're sorry that the bad spider put the bitey on Jericho! We purray that the leg heals real soon:)
ReplyDeleteOpal Nation...I am a fan I admit! I'll come back to read it carefully and take my time.
